Angling is one of the most popular participation sports in the UK. People of all ages and walks of life enjoy the many different types of fishing available, whether it be in the sea or freshwater and for a meal or just pleasure.
At Burghley, with its stunning lake, perfect for angling, we have a very popular Angling Village .
Here we offer “Have a Go” sessions, where you can have a free twenty minute angling lesson with qualified professionals. You can practice the skills and techniques in the fishing arenas. Since starting these “Have a Go” sessions literally thousands of visitors have taken part and many have become ardent fans of the pastime, developing a skill for life.
We are also delighted this year to be welcoming Charles Jardine, who will be demonstrating casting in the Countryside arena, then showing us how to cook what we catch in the Country Kitchen Marquee over in the Food Village!

Split Cane Rod Making
Whoever thought of splitting a piece of bamboo, planning and tapering the split pieces then joining them to make a hexagonal fishing rod ?
Peter Johnson appears in the Angling Trust stand to demonstrate the age old art of split cane rod making. Fascinating to watch and enjoyable to listen to, Peter brings this skill to life.
Salmon & Trout Conservation U.K.
Salmon & Trout Conservation U.K. is the only UK fisheries charity which campaigns politically for the management, protection and conservation of fish and the environment necessary for them to thrive.
Have a Go at Angling
Advice will be available on how to start trout and salmon fishing and game angling instructors from Salmon and Trout Conservation UK will be on hand to offer free trout casting instruction to beginners and juveniles (age 7 and over ). Just head over to the angling tent and book your session.
Have a Go Fly Casting
Instructors from GAIA (Game Anglers Instructors Association) will be giving fly casting lessons free of charge, and also showing you how to tie flies. Wendy Gibson is a professional fly dresser and Bob Lomax is a GAIA instructor who ties flies the paraloop way.

Grafham Fly Fishing – Grafham Water is one of the top trout waters in the country and the Grafham fly fishers will be there to talk about the water and how to fish it.
Rutland Fly Fishers – Members of the Rutland Fly Fishers will be there to talk about fishing and the courses they run at Rutland Water
Lincolnshire Police – Rural crime busting
Scottie Impregnanted Split Bamboo Fishing Rods – The Scottie range of split rods, made famous by Sharpes of Aberdeen, sold the Scottie label and it is now owned by Barry Grantham and Peter Waterhouse. These are now handcrafted by Barry, and a range of rods will be on display.
Lincolnshire Rivers Trust – will have an entomology stand and displays on the work they are doing to improve rivers and their habitat.
FREE FLY CASTING TUITION
Fly casting tuition will take place on the water in front of the tent. Come along and have a 20 minute free lesson with Barry Grantham GAIA instructor who will be helped by John Wadham another GAIA instructor. Book in at the Fly Fishing Marque
FREE FLY CASTING COMPETITION
After your lesson have a go at the competition you have 2 minutes to hit targets. The highest score over the show season wins a prize Book in at the Fly Fishing Marque
FREE FLY TYING COMPETITION
Come and tie a fly this year a Pheasant Tail Nymph. All materials and tools supplied. Best tied fly over the show season wins a prize. Come to the fly tying section of the Fly Fishing Marque.
Both of the above are free to enter and all equipment is provided. There will be an attractive prize for the winners judged over the show season
Fly casting demonstrations will go on most of the day in the tuition arena . We also have demonstrations in these arenas and the Countryside Arena by:
Barry Grantham – Salmon and Trout Conservation UK.
Barry is a local GAIA and Angling trust instructor from Lincoln and will give demonstrations on starting fly fishing and the more advanced casts. He will also be joined on one demonstration by his aid to landing fish his Labrador Drake.
Brian Towers A.A.P.G.A.I. of Yorkshire Fly-Casting – Brian’s expertise with A Double Handed rod is an art to behold ; Brian Guides and teachers on the River Ure in North Yorkshire. He demonstrates all aspect of fly fishing techniques both single handed and Double Handed rods. He guides on the rivers in North Yorkshire and in Scotland.
John this year will be giving a demonstration on casting pike flies and fishing for pike.

Yorkshire Fly Casting is a Yorkshire based Guiding, fly fishing and casting service, led by Yorkshire based AAPGAI (masters) instructor Brian Towers.
Brian has over forty years fly fishing experience including still waters, reservoirs and rivers. He can teach basic skills to get you started, iron out bad habits or move you on to more advanced techniques. Instruction includes both single and double handed rod lessons for Trout, Grayling and Salmon at various locations around Yorkshire.
Some of Brians beats are mainly on the River Ure at Bolton Castle, nr leyburn, Abbey beat at Jervaulx, and Swinton Park at Masham. The river Ure is a picturesque location in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales
Brian demonstrates and teaches at various country shows around Britain , including The great Yorkshire show, Harrogate, Sandringham country show and Lowther in Cumbria
